To me sculpture is as much about the time spent sculpting as it is the finished work. Sculpting is a time when nothing else clutters my mind and my focus is completely on the tools I hold in my hand. Since my pieces require a lot of time and energy I consider it a waste if I do not savor the experience.
Sculpture is taking an idea and turning it into something real. It’s the act of both innovation and execution. The idea or the innovation has to be processed in my mind a while where decisions are made on issues like material and technique. That innovative process could go on for some time, but until I execute it and turn it into a piece of fine art it remains absent from tangible existence.
I haven’t always been here. In the beginning for me it was all about the finished product. I thought of it as a present to myself. Now the reward is in the creative process for me. Art and life alike require constant adaptation which keeps us growing and moving forward — both of which help me generate new ideas.
I enjoy doing commissions for both public and private spaces. The opportunity and challenge of creating a piece for a particular place opens up a whole room of ideas in my mind, populated with different styles and mediums. With careful consideration this multitude of possibilities is then narrowed down to provide the best fit for the site. The result is sculpture that is in complete harmony with its surroundings.
